REMARKS TO COMMISSIONERS DURING PUBLIC COMMENTS 5-18-26
Good Evening,
To Commissioners: I have only one thing FOR YOU: I am disappointed. What is happening now reminds me of 2008 when over $20,000,000 dollars disappeared out of the Hospital trust fund because of COMMISSIONERS FAILING TO PAY ATTENTION.
So my remarks are to the people out here…go to the (QR)

250 YEARS AGO THE ISSUE WAS THE SAME; HIGH TAXES. I think COLONISTS would be FLABBERGASTED to see THAT THEIR OWN NEIGHBORS are passing laws to TAX their houses on INCOME they have not received. This is an UNFUNDED MANDATE BY THE COUNTY.

The MOST IMPORTANT THING is that COUNTY SPENDING HAS nearly doubled in 6 years. The “NEUTRAL REVENUE” figure IN THIS BUDGET is 44% higher than it was two years ago.
My CHOWAN property tax bill was $7000 last year, or $130 per week. IF you LIVE IN EDENTON you pay for TWO LOCAL GOVERNMENTS. My total property taxes last year to the town and county were over $11,000, or $931 a month. THE PROPERTY TAX is my most EXPENSIVE BILL every month. If the Manager’s budget recommendation holds MY CHOWAN TAX WILL INCREASE BY 27%. There is a CALCULATOR here (QR) where you can compute the tax you will owe in January.

YOU need to identify WRITE-IN candidates for District 1 and 3 by July 15. IF YOU DON’T DO THIS, WHO WILL???
A WRITE-IN CANDIDATE SHOULD BE YOUNG, age 30-40, DYNAMIC, SOCIAL MEDIA SAVY, AND AGREE THAT COUNTY SPENDING NEEDS TO MATCH THE FINANCES OF THE TAX PAYERS.
In District 2 , the doughnut around Edenton in November. LARRY MCLAUGHLIN IS RUNNING AGAINST KATHLEEN MIGLORIE . Please read what she wrote to me , HERE, a thoughtful analysis. She is the only Commissioner or candidate who replied. If you like her thinking vote for her. If you like the Budget AND ITS HIGHER TAXES , vote for Larry.
I THINK THIS ELECTION SHOULD BE A REFERENDUM ON HOW SATISFIED PEOPLE ARE WITH COUNTY SPENDING.
AT (QR) is a calculator where you can enter in your property’s tax for last year, the new valuation, and tax rate to see how much you will owe next January. Just enter your Chowan County Tax owed for last year and the new Valuation for your property recently received from the Tax Department. It will calculate the tax you owe depending on what TAX RATE the Commissioners impose. This will be decided in the last weeks of May and first week of June.

If the Commissioners DISAGREE with this Calculator, perhaps they will post a correct one on their website.
The Commissioners MAY HAVE DUG TOO DEEP A HOLE to fix their OVERSPENDING problem. I HOPE NOT.

CHAIRMAN KIRBY is retiring, so he is out of the picture
In District 1, north end of county, He is being replaced by a stealth candidate, LISA PERRY who will be automatically in office without ever receiving a single vote as she is running unopposed. I DONT KNOW HOW THIS HAPPENED. I provided the same questions to her that I did to the sitting commisioners and she did not respond. There is time for a WRITE IN CANDIDATE.
In District 3, in town, Commissioner Lawrence, in office for 16 years has no competition. He has no contact information (email or home phone) on the Commissioner website. A WRITE IN CANDIDATE might be able to unseat him
